Hector Lombard (33-4-1, 1 NC) finished Nate Marquardt (32-13-2) violently in the first round of his Welterweight debut on the UFC 166 FS1 prelims. Lombard improved to 2-2 in the UFC after a lackluster run in the Middleweight division. Marquardt is now on a three-fight losing streak, with two of those coming in his most recent UFC run.
Marquardt was well aware of Lombard's power early and tried to stay on the outside. Lombard caught him with a big right hand that had Nate on rubber legs. Hector chased after him and landed an uppercut from underneath his arm and that sent Nate to the mat. Lombard followed up with some ground strikes before the referee finally stopped it.
What was the high point of the fight?
The knockout sequence. It was already looking bad for Nate as he ate a big punch trying to clinch up and it only got worse after that.
Where do they go from here?
For the second time since coming on board the UFC, Lombard delivered exactly what the promotion wanted when they offered him that big money contract. With a fresh start in a new division, they'll be looking to put him in a feature fight against a top Welterweight. I'd give him Jake Shields who also recently returned to 170 lbs.
There's a good chance this is the end of the UFC line for Marquardt. White swore he wouldn't fight for the UFC again after the TRT debacle in 2011, but was brought on with the Strikeforce merger. He's now 0-2 since returning having lost both by spectacular KO. He may get one final shot based off his strength of schedule, but I wouldn't count on it.
Watch it now, never, or later?
It's a 2 minute fight with an awesome finish, go watch it!
