UFC 157 results recap: Urijah Faber vs. Ivan Menjivar

A recap of the UFC 157 bantamweight bout between Urijah Faber and Ivan Menjivar. Faber won the bout via submission in the first round.

Jeff Gross

In the third main card fight of UFC 157, Urijah Faber picked up a big first-round submission win over Ivan Menjivar. Faber entered the bout with his back to the wall to a degree, but he came in using his vaunted wrestling and speed. Menjivar hit a beautiful throw that saw him end up in side control, but Faber quickly reversed it. During the ensuing scramble, the fight was decided.

As Menjivar returned to his feet, Faber jumped onto his back in a crucifix position. He quickly climbed up Menjivar's back and sunk a choke. Menjivar wasn't sure what to do and before he had time to really think about it, the choke was sunk and he was forced to tap out. The finish came at 4:34 of the first round.

What was the high point of the fight?

The finish. Faber doesn't get enough credit for his submission game, and his finish was beautiful.

Where do they go from here?

Faber won't be going anywhere. He maintained his spot as the best guy at bantamweight below the champions, and a bout with Michael McDonald next would be awesome.

Menjivar won't be coming near the title picture again, but he'll serve as a very good gatekeeper for the top of the division. I'd like to see him face off with prospect Erik Perez next.

Watch now, later, or never?

Now. The bout has a lot of action packed into less than five minutes and the finishing sequence is great.
