Featherweights Dennis Bermudez and Matt Grice stole the Fight of the Night bonus for UFC 157 in one of the best fights of the year so far. In the end, Bermudez edged out Grice to take the split decision. Bermudez is now 3-1 in the UFC while Grice fell to 1-2.
The first two rounds held a brutal battle between the two 145ers. Grice managed to drop Bermudez in the first with a nice counter left hand, but Bermudez recovered. The second round went back and forth before Bermudez took over in the third. And he certainly took over. Grice was out on his feet several time in the final frame and I have no idea how he managed to survive until the bell. A great performance by both men though Bermudez got the nod.
What was the high point of this fight?
The third round could not have been more dramatic. The two had already put in 10 minutes in a war of attrition and it looked like Grice was finished again and again.
Where do they go from here?
Since losing his UFC debut at the TUF 14 Finale, Bermudez has now racked up three consecutive wins. Topping that off with a FOTN performance should put him in the good graces of the UFC. It also necessitates a step up in competition. Bart Palaszewski would be a good next fight for him.
Going 1-2 is always dangerous for a UFC fighter. However, Grice's other loss in the UFC is to the now top 10 Ricardo Lamas, which should be taken into account. He'll get another chance to bring his record up to .500.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Watch it now. It completely earned the FOTN honors and you'll want to see it.
