UFC 156 results recap: Joseph Benavidez vs. Ian McCall

A full results recap of the flyweight bout between Joseph Benavidez and Ian McCall that opened the UFC 156 main card. Benavidez won via unanimous decision.

USA TODAY Sports

In the opening main card bout of UFC 156, Joseph Benavidez outlasted fellow top flyweight Ian McCall and took home a unanimous decision win. Benavidez seemed to have McCall's timing down from the outset, landing some solid kicks and staggering Uncle Creepy with the right a couple of times early. It was definitely enough to control the first round.

McCall took a while to get going, but he won the second round and got a takedown in the third. Unfortunately for McCall, Benavidez was able to get up right away and land more strikes down the stretch. All three judges had it 29-28 for the Team Alpha Male fighter.

What was the high point of the fight?

The two fighters were clinched against the cage, and Benavidez said something to McCall to make him laugh. You rarely see that in a cage fight.

Where do they go from here?

Benavidez is unquestionably the number two flyweight in the world right now, but he's one fight removed from a title shot where he lost. Because the division is so new, the UFC might choose to go right back to another bout with Demetrious Johnson. If not, he'll be matched up with a top contender like John Moraga.

McCall is now 0-2-1 in the UFC, but all three of those bouts were against the best the division has to offer. He'll finally get a matchup where he's likely the favorite the next time out, and the most logical opponent for Creepy right now should be Chris Cariaso.

Watch now, later, or never?

Now. The bout went to a decision, but there was certainly enough action to entertain you for 15 minutes.
