In the opening bout for the UFC 155 prelims on Facebook, John Moraga wrapped up a guillotine choke to submit Chris Cariaso in the third round (1:11). Moraga (13-1) remains undefeated as a UFC Flyweight with two wins. Cariaso (14-4) dropped to 4-2 in the UFC and 1-1 at 125 lbs.
Moraga and Cariaso didn't exactly set the world on fire in their first two rounds. Moraga spent most of the first round hunting for a head kick that he refused to set up, while Cariaso wanted a counter game he couldn't make effective. So the first 10 minutes mostly featured them landing one-off shots just out of range. That changed in the 3rd round, though. When Cariaso failed an early takedown from the clinch, Moraga capitalized with a guillotine choke. With Cariaso's back against the fence, he used the cage to leverage and get the tap.
What was the high point of this fight?
Without a doubt, the choke. The fight was slow before that, but Moraga took the opportunity to finish when he had it.
Where do they go from here?
Saturday's win gave Moraga to consecutive finishes over top 10 fighters in as many UFC fights. Not many other fighters (aside from Johny Hendricks) could do that without getting a title shot. He should get the winner of Demetrious Johnson vs. John Dodson at UFC On Fox 6, but his UFC 155 fight being buried on Facebook may keep him from that title shot.
Cariaso's still new to the Flyweight division, but he's already shown he can compete with the best. For his next fight, he could welcome Ian McCall back to the Octagon.
