On the top of the UFC 154 FX prelims, Alessio Sakara faced off against Patrick Cote. It was a short fight, but not without controversy. Less than 90 seconds into the Sakara put away Cote, but was disqualified for illegal blows to the back of the head.
As expected the two Middleweights didn't waste any time to start trading leather. Cote landed the first big shot before being tied up against the fence. Sakara hurt Cote with a series of elbows. When he went to follow up with hammerfists, Sakara landed around 10 direct shots to the back of the head before referee Dan Miragliotta stopped the action. Several stories have come up about how the DQ was determined, but the fact remains that Cote was awarded the win.
What was the high point of the fight?
The fight ending sequence. There's no doubt the final series of strikes were illegal, but you have to see for yourself how poorly Tan Dan handled the situation.
Where do they go from here?
The UFC got exactly what they wanted out of Legionarius and The Predator - an action packed, standandbang, barn burner. With the bout being as exciting and fast paced as it was, I expect the UFC to use the controversy to sell a rematch.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Watch it now. On top of it being a fun fight, you'll want to judge the ending and the officiating yourself.
