Batting second on the UFC 153 FX prelims, Diego Brandao decisioned all over Joey Gambino. Both fighters entered looking to rebound from losses in their last fights. Brandao did and jumps up to 2-1 in the UFC (15-8 Overall). Gambino picked up his second loss in as many UFC bouts and drops to 9-2 in his career.
Diego got the action started early with a big head kick followed by a flurry, but Gambino stayed in the fight and recovered. That would be the essential story of the rest of the bout. Don't get me wrong, Gambino was in it and landed some solid shots of his own. But repeatedly Brandao landed a big shot to put him down.
What was the high point of this fight?
Early in the second, Diego dropped Joey with a big right hand. Gambino showed a lot of heart and managed to recover.
Where do they go from here?
This was a big win for the TUF 14 veteran. After becoming the Featherweight Ultimate Fighter last December, Brandao dropped a decision to Darren Elkins at UFC 146. Last night's victory keeps him in the game and gives him a chance to start moving up the ladder.
Gambino's loss was probably his last chance in the UFC. He debuted for the promotion back in June at UFC On FX 4 in a losing effort against Steven Siler. It's very rare for an unknown fighter to get more than two chances to make a good impression.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Watch it later. There's plenty of action on the main card that deserves your attention more.
