UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen won the prime time spot for the launch of Fox's new sports channel FS1. The entire card delivered action in spades with a five hour televised broadcast out of the TD Garden Arena in Boston, MA. Prior to the televised card, the UFC aired 3 fights on Facebook.
Manny Gamburyan (13-7) vs. Cole Miller (19-8)
In the only decision on the Facebook card, the Featherweights went back and forth for 15 minutes. Miller landed numerous straight punches and kicks any time they were on the feet while Gamburyan struggled to land lunging overhand punches. Cole couldn't keep the fight on the feet, though, and Gamburyan was awarded the unanimous decision.
This win probably saved Gamburyan from being cut. He's only 2-2 in his most recent UFC run and has been inactive due to injury. Miller could easily be on the chopping block. He's now 1-3 in his last four fights and hasn't put together two wins since 2010.
Ovince St. Preux (14-5) vs. Cody Donovan (8-3)
Following a disappointing showing in his UFC debut, Light Heavyweight St. Preux performed much better in his second bout with the company. Donovan started to hit a takedown early in the first round, OSP reversed and ended up in guard. From there, he unleashed a series of left hands that forced the stoppage at 2:07.
Ignoring St Preux's loss to Mousasi in the fighter intros was an interesting production choice, to say the least. Aside from that, he performed much better this time around than he did in his debut and remains undefeated in the UFC. Donovan is now down to 1-1 with the promotion and he should get one more chance to win on the prelims.
James Vick (5-0) vs. Ramsey Nijem (7-4)
Ramsey came in early looking for the takedown. However, the much taller Lightweight Vick countered the first attempt with a heavy sprawl. When Ramsey persisted trying for the double-leg, Vick grabbed onto a front choke and got the tap in under a minute. Vick claimed a win in his first UFC fight, while Nijem dropped to 3-3 since coming out of the TUF 13 house.
An impressive finish in his debut will put Vick in the good graces of the UFC brass to start his time with the promotion. Nijem might get one more shot in the Octagon since he's only on a 2-fight loss streak, but I wouldn't count on it. He lacks any remarkable wins and just lost on the FB opener. There's a good chance he gets the pink slip.
