The 2nd fight of the UFC 168 main card pitted veteran lightweight contender Jim Miller against BJJ black belt Fabricio Camoes. Miller came into this one ranked #10 and Camoes not only unranked but with just 1 UFC win in 4 fights. This was due to be a good bounce-back opportunity for Jim, who was coming off a loss (later turned to no contest) in April.
Miller and Camoes were content to exchange a little bit on the feet, with Camoes able to land the left hooks. Camoes had a high kick caught by Miller who then fired an elbow before taking him to the ground. Miller was later taken down by Camoes and forced to work off his back, and he set up an armbar on the BJJ black belt that to the fans didn't seem threatening, but was serious enough that Camoes was forced to tap. You'll be seeing a technique post on that later this week. Jim Miller def. Fabricio Camoes via submission (armbar) at 3:42, round 1.
What was the high point of the fight?
Definitely Miller's armbar. It was a fast-paced bout but that was certainly a big turn of events in Miller's favor and he once again wins by submission.
Where do these two go from here?
Miller (23-4, 1 NC MMA; 12-3, 1 NC UFC) keeps his status as a top 10 fighter alive with this finish, but there's really not much else he gained beyond getting back in the win column. He'll either get another top 10 fighter or someone on the outside looking in like Michael Johnson.
Camoes (14-8-1 MMA, 1-3-1 UFC) has had a tough set of fights in his UFC return. He got Melvin Guillard prior to Saturday's fight and this is the 2nd time he's been submitted in the organization. It's possible he could be cut, but it's more likely he's given one last chance against someone in a similar undesirable position.
Watch now, later, or never?
Later. It's not a long fight and the finish was definitely unexpected and it's a well earned victory for Miller.
