Second up on the FX portion of the UFC 163 prelims, Sergio Moraes (8-2) impressed with a first round submission victory over Neil Magny (8-2). Since losing in the TUF Brazil 1 finals at UFC 147, Moraes has now strung together two consecutive victories, both by submission. Magny won his UFC debut at UFC 157, but fell to 1-1 with this loss.
After a brief striking exchange, Moraes got inside and secured a takedown from the clinch. After getting the fight to the ground, Moraes passed Magny's guard quickly and locked up a triangle choke from mount. He rolled onto his back to deliver some violent elbows before sweeping back to mount and getting the tap.
What was the high point of the fight?
The entire finishing sequence from where Moraes locked on the triangle from mount. An absolutely beautiful use of elbows from the triangle and a fantastic sweep to finish. Great display by Moraes.
Where do they go from here?
A great performance from Moraes, but beating Magny isn't going to bring him far up the ladder. Especially in a division as deep as Welterweight. That said, with two finishes under his belt against the low tier of the division, it's time he faced stronger competition.
Considering UFC president Dana White's disdain for the entirety of TUF 16, I wouldn't expect to see Magny in the Octagon again. Yeah, he's only 1-1 as a UFC fighter, but his win over Jon Manley was less than impressive. Since Dana probably won't be granting him the typical leniency for TUF veterans, he'll most likely be cut after this loss.
