Lightweight John Makdessi (11-2) opened up the FX prelims for UFC 158 with a unanimous decision win over Daron Cruickshank (12-3). Makdessi improved to 4-2 in the UFC with a two fight win streak while Cruickshank suffered his first loss in the Octagon and dropped to 2-1.
The fight got off to a slow start in the first with both men throwing a lot of feints and not landing many strikes. But then, in the second round, the fight started to come together. Cruickshank landed a solid head kick to open the round, but Makdessi took over and started landing good punches and kicks. He held on to the momentum in the final round landing his jab throughout as well as solid kicks.
What was the high point of the fight?
In the second round Makdessi punished Cruickshank with a left hook after Daron forgot to throw a strike when spinning.
Where do they go from here?
Definitely a solid win for Makdessi. Cruickshank and Stout aren't names that will launch him into the top of the division, but it's a good start. I'd like to see him against someone like Bobby Green next.
Cruickshank lost the decision but didn't look too bad in defeat. He'll get another chance against a lower tier Lightweight to get back to his winning ways.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Watch it later. Not a bad fight, but there's more to be seen from the event.
