Rick Story (15-6) got back on track Saturday night with a first round knockout of Quinn Mulhern (18-3) to close out the UFC 158 Facebook prelims. The win kicked Story's UFC record up to 8-4. The fight was Mulhern's first in the UFC since transferring over from Strikeforce.
The whole fight was all about Rick Story. He landed hard on Mulhern in the opening seconds and proceeded to stalk his prey. However, he got a little wild halfway through the round and ended up eating a few shots from Mulhern. He got the momentum back after landing a big blow to Quinn's eye. After that, Story blitzed Mulhern with a flurry and got the stoppage at 3:05 of round 1.
What was the high point of the fight?
The final flurry from Story to finish the fight. He dropped Quinn with a wild left then unloaded vicious blows to the body to get the stop.
Where do they go from here?
Rick Story was starting to make a big impression on the Welterweight division a couple years ago with a six fight win streak. However, prior to UFC 158, he was sporting an unimpressive record of 1-3 in his last four fights. The win over Mulhern probably saved his spot on the UFC roster.
As a transferee from Strikeforce, there was a lot of pressure on Mulhern to look good in his UFC debut. Having lost in spectacular fashion he may not get another chance to prove himself.
