UFC welterweight contender Carlos Condit has not won since May 2015, and throughout his current four-fight losing streak, there has been talk, often from Condit himself, about stepping away from the sport.
Following his defeat to Alex Oliveira in April, Condit hinted at retirement by admitting he was unsure of his future, adding, “Maybe my time has passed.”
For the time being, it looks as if Condit is going to fight on.
MMAjunkie spoke with Condit’s manager, Abraham Kawa, and he claims that Condit will be ready to fight again by the end of the year, although he did not specify an opponent.
Condit (30-12) is the former WEC welterweight champion, as well as a one-time interim UFC champion. His losing streak began in January 2016, when he lost by split decision in an epic brawl with then-champ Robbie Lawler. After coming agonizingly close to becoming the undisputed UFC 170-pound king, Condit was dominated and submitted by Demian Maia, after which he said he wasn’t sure if he belonged in the sport anymore.
More than a year would pass by before Condit returned to the Octagon, and he wound up dropping a decision to Neil Magny at UFC 219. He was slated to face Matt Brown at UFC on FOX 29, but injury to Brown led to Alex Oliveira stepping up on short notice and choking the bloodied Condit out in round 2.
Condit has long been a fan favorite for his entertaining fights, but at 34 years old, he’s clearly hit the downside of his career. The big question now is how much longer he’ll compete.
