UFC 230 comes to us live tonight (Saturday, November 3rd) from the Mecca — Madison Square Garden — in New York, NY. Headlining the event is a fight that came out of left field; Daniel Cormier vs. Derrick Lewis for Cormier’s UFC heavyweight title.
Though it’s odd, few can deny the intrigue factor of Cormier’s first UFC heavyweight title defense. In Lewis he finds a dangerous KO artist who has become, as of late, one of the more popular fighters on the roster. Can “The Black Beast” show he’s more than a flavour of the month and add his name to the UFC’s hall of champions? Or will Cormier prove, once again, that he’s one of the best fighters to ever compete at both light heavyweight and heavyweight.
The pay-per-view main card for UFC 230 packs a punch with four middleweight bouts, some of which include fighters who could challenge for the title sooner rather than later. The co-main is former champion Chris Weidman taking on Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza. Before that David Branch meets Jared Cannonier (on short notice), Karl Roberson faces Jack Marshman, and Derek Brunson clashes with Israel Adesanya.
The FS1 Prelim card, which has some exciting potential, starts at 8 PM ET. The featured prelim sees Jason Knight (aka “Hick Diaz”) take on Jordan Rinaldi at 145 lbs. Also on the card is a women’s flyweight tilt between briefly announced title challenger Sijara Eubanks and the Happy Warrior Roxanne Modafferi. Rounding out the prelims are Julio Arce vs. Sheymon Moraes (145 lbs) and Lyman Good vs. Bloody Elbow reader Ben Saunders (170 lbs).
The UFC Fight Pass Early Prelims have four fights tonight, those kick off at 6:15 PM ET. Headlining that portion of the night is a lightweight bout between Matt Frevola and Lando Vannata. Also on Fight Pass, Shane Burgos fights Kurt Holobaugh in the featherweight division and Brian Kelleher meets Montel Jackson at bantamweight. To start everything off Adam Wieczorek and Marcos Rogerio De Lima collide in the heavyweight division.
