It wouldn’t be fight week without at least one terribly failed weight cut. And while Cynthia Calvillo coming in 2 lbs over the strawweight limit (she weighed in at 118) is hardly the most egregious miss in UFC history, the video of her trying to get on the scale during weigh-ins paints a much more concerning picture.
Calvillo came out for early weigh-ins with two officials, and went straight to the ‘towel’ instead of weighing in with normal minimal amount of clothing. Visibly fatigued, she clearly had trouble standing upright, approaching the scale extremely cautiously. As she got on and put her arms out above the curtain, she looked near collapsing.
Her fight with 7-1 Brazilian prospect Poliana Botelho is still going ahead, however, despite Calvillo’s obvious fatigue. Brazilian Athletic Commission officials overseeing the event in Argentina for the UFC told MMA Fighting that Calvillo “did an evaluation and everything is alright. She will rest now, hydrate, eat, and then she will be ready.” Calvillo will be fined 20% of her fight purse for failing to make 116 lbs.
All other fighters for the Buenos Aires fight card made weight for the Saturday event.
