The United Kingdom continues to be a hotbed for boxing, and that continues today (Saturday, November 10th) at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England, as undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (15-0, 11 KOs) puts all four major titles (WBC, WBO, IBF, and WBA) on the line against England’s own Tony Bellew (30-2-1, 20 KOs), himself a former WBC champ at 200 lbs.

This is both a chance for Usyk to cement himself as 2018’s Boxer of the Year, as well as a potential storybook ending for Bellew, who intends to retire after this contest. Usyk is one of the best boxers in the world, having won Olympic gold in 2012 and run through the top cruiserweights in the World Boxing Super Series. He is good friends with Vasyl Lomachenko, and Loma’s dad Anatoly has also trained Usyk in the past. His combination of speed, footwork, excellent angles, volume punching, and cardio has befuddled all of his professional foes to date, and he is likely to move up to heavyweight in 2019 to take on the elite in that division, including a possible matchup with Anthony Joshua. Bellew is coming off a pair of wins over David Haye, and while he is clearly not as skilled as Usyk, he’s hardly a pushover, and possesses good power. If he were to pull this off it’d be a famous win for British boxing, plus a wonderful ride off into the sunset for his career. Fair play to him for taking this challenge, and you know it’ll be a fun fight when he’s involved.
