We’re just past the midway point of the UFC Fight Night: Swanson vs. Lobov main card in Nashville, Tennessee. John Dodson got back on the winning track with a win over Eddie Wineland, while Ovince Saint Preux avoided a four-fight losing streak by submitting Marcos Rogerio de Lima. Here’s how the fights played out.
Ovince Saint Preux def. Marcos Rogerio de Lima by submission (Von Flue choke) at 2:11 of round 2 - 210 lbs catchweight
Lima came out throwing kicks. Plenty of them. OSP was patient, moving around, and waiting for an opening. Lima caught OSP with a left hook and maintained his aggressive start. OSP finally threw some meaningful offense with about 90 seconds left in the first round, smashing Lima’s midsection with a body kick. The Tennessee-native had a takedown stuffed but he was getting into a little more of a rhythm as the opening frame drew to a close.
Lima continued with the kicking attack, and OSP adjusted by switching stances. OSP caught a Lima kick and took the Brazilian down. Elbows cut Lima open and there were signs that he was fatiguing. Lima had OSP in a headlock, but in no danger of a guillotine. As he accomplished against Nikita Krylov, OSP used the Von Flue choke to submit his opponent. He was in Lima’s half-guard and applying shoulder pressure and Lima had no choice but to tap. A much-needed win for Saint Preux in front of his home fans, while Lima not only came in overweight but ended up with his third submission loss in less than two years.
John Dodson def. Eddie Wineland by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27) - Bantamweights
Wineland connected early with a straight right on the former flyweight title challenger. Dodson sneaked in a left to the chest of Wineland. A burst of offense by Dodson backed Wineland up against the fence momentarily. Dodson’s speed and timing was on point, although not a lot of truly damaging blows were landing. Two left hands came through for Dodson as the first round ended.
After Wineland connected on a punch in round two, Dodson answered with a blinding two-punch combo to the head. Wineland countered a Dodson kick with a good right hand but his offense was in single shots and there wasn’t much in the way of a rhythm to his game. Wineland got caught with a flush head kick but ate it incredibly well. Dodson was able to cut past Wineland’s reach advantage time and time again, pick his shots, and get out of the former WEC champion’s range. Dodson surged forward with just over a minute to go in round two and cracked Wineland with multiple shots.
The kickboxing theme of the fight continued in the final round. Wineland needed to let his hands go and sure enough he did land a hard right hand, but Dodson took it well. Dodson clipped Wineland with a left from his southpaw stance. Three straight lefts hurt Wineland, who was just not able to get his offense going. With 90 seconds left, Wineland was credited with 10 total strikes landed. A dominant win for Dodson, if not incredibly eventful. Wineland sees his two-fight winning streak end, while Dodson rebounds from a controversial loss to John Lineker.
