The UFC on FOX 21 main event featured a big welterweight matchup between Carlos Condit and Demian Maia, with the winner holding a strong claim for a title shot. This was Condit's first bout since his gutwrenching split decision defeat to Robbie Lawler at UFC 195, while Maia was seeking his 6th consecutive win.
Condit opened up in a southpaw stance. Early takedown by Maia unsurprisingly was successful. Maia took his time, advanced to back mount and went for the rear-naked choke and got it. Condit was completely and thoroughly outclassed on the ground. Ridiculously easy work from the masterful BJJ practitioner.
Official result: Demian Maia def. Carlos Condit via submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:52 of round 1
For perspective, the last man to submit Carlos Condit was Pat Healy way back in 2006. Maia has now won by submission (all by rear-naked choke) in 3 of his last 4 fights. Condit drops to 2-5 in his last 7, perhaps out of title contention for good after such a lopsided affair.
