As soon as UFC 202: Diaz vs McGregor II finished, people were clamoring for a trilogy fight.
McGregor said as much in the post-fight interview, vowing to set up the third fight in the lightweight division, on his terms.
The Notorious tied things up at 1-1 last week, earning a majority decision after battling back-and-forth with Diaz until the final bell.
McGregor was originally supposed to challenge then-champion Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title at UFC 196, but the Brazilian pulled out with a foot injury and Diaz stepped in as a welterweight opponent. Diaz, a former lightweight title challenger, submitted McGregor via rear-naked choke in the second round and earned scores of fans with his savvy post-fight interview.
In both fights, McGregor’s jump from featherweight to welterweight seemed to affect his cardio, as the Irishman began to tire midway through the second round.
SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh seems to be in agreement, posting on Twitter that McGregor would have an easier time getting the stoppage at 155-pounds.
Diaz is waiting for the UFC to contact him regarding the third fight and McGregor says he’s open to fights outside of the promotion, possibly hinting at a boxing showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Whatever happens next, both men left the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas last week as legends, delivering what many consider to be a fight of the ages in one of the highest grossing pay-per-views of all time.
