Andre Ward is finally going to get a big fight again, assuming he can win a tune-up in the meantime. The Olympic gold medalist and longtime super middleweight champ made the move to light heavyweight earlier this year, and earned a shot at Sergey Kovelev with a March win. Now that matchup is set - for November 19th, in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Again, this agreement is being made on the assumption that both men will win fights in the meantime.
Ward (29-0, 15 KO) defeated Sullivan Barrera by wide decision in March. He has only fought twice in the last three years due to injuries and a dispute with promoter Dan Goossen.
Kovalev (29-0-1, 26 KO) currently holds the WBA (Super), IBF, and WBO light heavyweight titles. He's coming off a second thrashing of Jean Pascal in January, and has knocked out pretty much all of his recent competition with the exception of Bernard Hopkins. Kovalev will face Isaac Chilemba in his tune-up bout in July 11th in Russia.
This will be one of the bigger boxing events of 2016, and will air on HBO PPV.
