The idea of how MMA functions has been fascinating to me ever since I came upon it. MMA is, at its heart, an almost formless sort of activity. There's hybrid arts that make up it's core: wrestling, grappling, kickboxing. But the open rule set, large playing field (at least at the UFC level), and subjective scoring criteria make for something whose possibilities seem to constantly be expanding as they're explored.

Just watching the sport can tell you a whole hell of a lot about how it works. What techniques are tried and fail, what systems are best applied, when and where. But there's a lot about mixed martial arts that can't be gathered just from a distance. That's a lot of what Bloody Elbow Cross Promotion is about as I attempt to examine some of the larger narratives in MMA and learn more about them, from people who know more than I do.

This time out I'm talking to Invicta analyst and matchmaker Julie Kedzie about the development of women's MMA and what it's like trying to book fights in the combat sports world.
