Enrique Marin nearly pulled off the upset against the much-hyped Sage Northcutt at UFC 200. Unfortunately, “nearly” wasn’t enough, and now the 30-year-old’s UFC run is over.
Earlier this week, Marin confirmed on his Instagram page that he’s been let go by the promotion, citing both the loss to Northcutt and “some changes within the company” per the Spanish-to-English translation. (H/T MMA Fighting)
Marin (9-4) lost by split decision to Erick Montano in the final of The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America 2. The Northcutt fight soon followed, and he was close to submitting “Super Sage” in the 2nd round, but was unable to force Northcutt to tap to a deep armbar. Marin ultimately lost by 29-28 unanimous decision, so a pair of close defeats has sent him packing. He also said in his Instagram statement that he plans to continue his fighting career for other promotions, although no fight has been scheduled for him yet.
With the release of Marin, none of the opponents Sage Northcutt has beaten in the UFC -- Francisco Trevino, Cody Pfister, and Marin -- is currently on the UFC roster.
Also of note, women’s bantamweight Larissa Pacheco appears to be out of the UFC. She went 0-2 inside the Octagon, losing by stoppage to both Jessica Andrade and Germaine de Randamie. Pacheco hadn’t fought since the de Randamie fight in March 2015, but she’s scheduled to face Rosy Duarte on November 19th, for a regional promotion in Brazil.
