Frankie Edgar isn't too thrilled about Conor McGregor's move up to the lightweight division. Edgar, who was a serious candidate to take on the Irishman in his next bout, recently claimed that McGregor is "calling the shots" on The MMA Hour.
His coach, Mark Henry, isn't too pleased with the news either. Henry made an Instagram post sarcastically celebrating McGregor's lightweight title fight against Rafael dos Anjos.
The caption reads, "@thenotoriousmma and @coach_kavanagh unlike most of the 145 pd division that is upset you're going up I'm not. I want to congratulate you on actually fighting men your own size. I mean walking 175-180 fighting at 155 takes a brave man. When you say 99 % of people couldn't make the weight cut Conner makes to 145 your right, because 99 % of the fighters aren't as scared as Conner to have to drop that much weight. Fear could will a man to do amazing things. Now why don't you drop the security blanket and leave the 145 pd belt and go full blown BIG BOY. Congratulations again....... Almost. PS @frankieedgar walked 156 when he won 155 title."
McGregor, who called out dos Anjos at the UFC's Go Big conference in September, will challenge the Brazilian for the 155 lbs. championship at UFC 197 on March 5th. Dos Anjos has cemented himself as the new lightweight king after thrashing Anthony Pettis and TKO'ing Donald Cerrone to retain the title in December.
"The Notorious" earned the fastest ever title-fight KO when he ended Jose Aldo's dominant reign in just thirteen seconds at UFC 194 and will look to become the first ever simultaenous two-division UFC champion in March.
It's expected that Frankie Edgar will wait until McGregor returns to the featherweight division for a potential shot at the title at UFC 200. However, Jose Aldo claims that Dana White promised him a title eliminator fight against "The Answer" to determine the next 145 lbs. contender.
