The only two major pay-per-views boxing has had this year have both been Floyd Mayweather fights. His super showdown (and super dud, to some) against Manny Pacquiao in May, and then his "retirement" bout against Andre Berto last month. In less than two weeks, a potential new PPV star makes his debut on the platform, as WBA middleweight (160 lbs) champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) takes on Canadian power puncher David Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Golovkin has won 20 straight by KO or TKO, while Lemieux has bounced back from consecutive 2011 defeats with 9 consecutive victories en route to the biggest fight of his career.
There are two major (meaningful) belts on the line: Golovkin's WBA belt and Lemieux's IBF, so this is a unification match-up. It is expected that the winner of November's Canelo Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto clash will face the winner of Golovkin vs. Lemieux, and fans everywhere would surely be enticed by Canelo vs. Golovkin out of all the possible combinations.
HBO has released its preview for the fight, chronicling the respective journeys of both men as they prepare for their big showdown at The Big Apple. You can watch "Road to Golovkin vs. Lemieux" video at the top of the page. Alternatively, per my request, Caposa has captured a Vine of the best part of the entire thing.
Bloody Elbow will have complete coverage of Golovkin vs. Lemieux, including play-by-play of the live HBO PPV at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT. For all of your boxing needs on a daily basis, please check out Bad Left Hook.
