Daniel Cormier edged Alexander Gustafsson in a close and competitive match up that went back and forth on several moments of the fight. In the end, DC ended up with a split decision win that had his hand raised, but how were the official scores tallied? Check the photo below courtesy of MMA Fighting.
Sal D'Amato gave Cormier rounds 1, 3 and 5. Judge Derek Cleary gave Gustafsson rounds 2, 3 and 4, while Kerry Hatley gave rounds 1, 3, 4 and 5 to Cormier to end up with a 49-46 score.
It is interesting to note that round 3 was where Gustafsson dropped and badly hurt Cormier. That was basically the biggest moment of the contest, and the closest it came to finishing the fight, yet two of those judges (and some media members) still scored it for DC.
Should more but weaker and less significant shots earlier on weigh more than a devastating knockdown that had DC wobbly and trying to survive until the bell? Like Jon Jones, I'd give DC props for showing heart, but I'm not sure I'd give him points to win the round.
