An entertaining night of action culminated with an exciting inaugural women's strawweight title fight between Carla Esparza and Rose Namajunas. It was high quality finish to a night mostly dedicated to announcing the UFC's newly minted 115-pound division.
Former Invicta FC champion Carla Esparza maintained her stranglehold of the strawweight division with a submission victory over Namajunas in the third round of their main event match-up. It was a typical relentless performance from Esparza, who showcased her trademark strategy en route to the title-winning sequence.
Although he was faced with some unnecessary adversity in the form of incompetent reffing, Yancy Medeiros picked up a late submission stoppage in the opening round of his main card fight against Joe Proctor. It was an impressive showing despite not getting any recognition from the referee for an unintentional low blow from Proctor. He eventually ended the contest with a fantastic spinning back kick to the body that brought about the fight-ending guillotine choke.
TUF 20 semi-finalists Randa Markos and Jessica Penne put on arguably the highest quality match-up between the female fighters on the card in their main card showing on Friday night. Penne displayed her crafty grappling acumen, while Markos continued to show why she has the potential to become one of the division's most terrifying challenges.
