UFC Fight Night Condit vs. Kampmann fight card primer: Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

In the main event at UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann, former UFC Interim Welterweight champion Carlos Condit (28-7 MMA; 5-3 UFC) faces Martin Kampmann (20-6 MMA; 11-5 UFC). The official UFC rankings have Condit as the #2 contender at Welterweight with Kampmann at #6. UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann 2 airs live on Fox Sports 1 this Wednesday, September 28 with the main card starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.

The big story here is of course the rematch. Condit and Kampmann first met in the cage back in 2009. At the time, Condit was making his UFC debut after leaving the WEC as Welterweight champion. It was unclear how the WEC talent would do in their transition to the big stage of the UFC. The two men engaged in a great back and forth war, with Kampmann finally walking away with a split decision win. In the four years since, neither man has moved away from the upper echelon of the division. Now, they do battle once again.

How do these two stack up?

Condit: 29 years old | 6'2" | 76" reach
Kampmann: 31 years old | 6'0" | 72" reach

What have these two done recently?

Condit: L - Johny Hendricks (UD) | L - Georges St. Pierre (UD) | W - Nick Diaz (UD)
Kampmann: L - Johny Hendricks (KO) | W - Jake Ellenberger (KO) | W - Thiago Alves (Sub)

How did these two get here?

Carlos Condit followed up his UFC debut loss to Kampmann with a great run, winning 5 straight over the likes of Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger. But it was his 2012 win over Nick Diaz that proved Condit is for real. Unfortunately for fans of The Natural Born Killer, he has not been able to follow up on that success. After taking some time off to wait for he return of GSP, Condit has gone 0-2 since the Diaz win. Both were great fights where Condit gave his all, but he's come up just short both times. Condit has never lost 3 in a row in his career, and he certainly doesn't want to start tonight.

More Bloody Elbow coverage of UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann 2

Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann has made a tremendous run in the UFC while always being the guy just barely out of contention. He's been fighting exclusively inside the Octagon for 7 years, and has always faced a very tough level of competition. He had a strong run in 2011/12, but saw that run stopped dead in its tracks by a Johny Hendricks KO last November. For Kampmann to finally show that he is not a gate-keeper to the elite, he needs a win here.

Why should you care?

Did you see their first fight? Or, for that matter, have you ever seen these guys fight? This is going to be great.
