Gabriel Gonzaga and Dave Herman met at their career crossroads in the heavyweight division. For Napao it was an opportunity to prove that his years of experience and technical abilities meant more than Dave Herman's continually untapped potential. Neither fighter had much chance of making a run at the top of the division, but one of them would at least stick around for a few more fights.
When the clock struck and the guns were drawn it was Gabriel Gonzaga left standing. Seventeen seconds into the opening round he blitzed through a lazy kick and caught Herman flush with an overhand right. A couple of follow up strikes sealed the deal and gave Gonzaga what may have been one of the most important wins of his career. Gabriel Gonzaga def. Dave Herman via KO (punch) at 0:17 of Round 1.
What was the high point?
The KO of course. That was pretty much the fight; one crushing right hand.
What was the low point?
Dave Herman's potential. I doubt he'll ever get another shot in the UFC.
Where do they go from here?
For Gonzaga he's earned the right to hang around and test himself against the low end of the UFC's heavyweight division for a while. Roy Nelson would be a fun fight if the UFC still wants to see the back of one of them. Otherwise I'd recommend Derrick Lewis when he returns form injury as it keeps Gonzaga nicely in his gatekeeper role.
For Herman, he's gone, he's got to be. Anything less is a disservice to everyone else fighting in the organization.
Watch now, later, or never?
Watch it now. You can't spare 17 seconds? Of course you can.
