We've got ourselves another injury affecting the UFC 164 fight card. Strikeforce veteran Quinn Mulhern planned a drop to lightweight to fight Ryan Couture on August 31st, but as he posted on Instagram, he fractured his hand and is off the card. Replacing him is TUF 15 runner-up Al Iaquinta, who hasn't fought since losing the season finale to Michael Chiesa in June of last year.
Iaquinta (5-2-1) is recovering from his own injury which forced him out of UFC 159. The Long Island native fought in Ring of Combat in New Jersey, as has been the case for other New York and New Jersey fighters such as Costa Philippou, Chris Weidman, Uriah Hall, Frankie Edgar, and others.
Couture (6-2) was knocked out in his UFC debut by Ross Pearson in the co-main event of UFC on Fuel 9 in Sweden. He should arguably be on a two fight losing streak, as an overwhelming majority of fans and media members had him losing to K.J. Noons this past January in Strikeforce.
UFC 164 wil take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with Ben Henderson defending his lightweight title against Anthony Pettis. Iaquinta vs. Couture will likely be on the preliminary card.
