It was just under two weeks ago that UFC 161 lost its main event of Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland after Barao suffered a foot injury, and now we could be facing the possibility of a canceled UFC 162 main event. A report from Luis Prota from Yahoo Brazil says that middleweight champion Anderson Silva has suffered a rib fracture, jeopardizing his title fight with Chris Weidman in Las Vegas on July 6th. The article is written entirely in Portuguese, but Prota, whose article was also linked to by Tatame's Guilherme Cruz, tweeted the following in English:
I assume by "gravity" he meant severity and his original word may have been mistranslated. If this is true and Silva is indeed out of UFC 162, it would be a big hit to the UFC's annual 4th of July week card in Las Vegas. The main card is filled with high-level featherweights (but not PPV draws) as well as middleweights Mark Munoz and Tim Boetsch, both coming off stoppage losses.
Now, this is an unconfirmed report, and MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani later tweeted that both Silva's camp and UFC president Dana White deny that The Spider has an injury:
