In the co-main event of UFC 160, Junior dos Santos (16-2, 10-1 UFC) secured another shot at the UFC heavyweight title by knocking out Mark Hunt (9-8, 4-2 UFC) late in the third round. The two heavyweights went to war for over 14 minutes before JDS scored with a spectacular spinning wheel kick that laid Hunt out. One followup punch was all it took for the fight to be over. It came to a close at 4:18 of round three.
Hunt was knocked down by a Dos Santos punch in the first, but landed some hard shots of his own in the first and second rounds. He suffered a broken toe at some point which didn't help, and his gas tank was close to empty going into the third. That's when Cigano landed the amazing kick.
What was the high point of the fight?
Obviously the spinning kick. The knockdown in the first was pretty dramatic as well though.
Where do they go from here?
Dos Santos almost assuredly goes straight into a third bout with UFC 160 main event winner Cain Velasquez, where he hopes to get his title back. The men split their first two fights, and have continually proven to be the two best heavyweights in the world. The bout will likely take place in the fall sometime.
Hunt's cinderella run is now over for now, but a thin division means that he might be able to get back to the top with a couple more wins. The clock is ticking on the 39-year-old though. There are a few options for his next bout, but the consensus would like to see him meet Roy Nelson. I personally think he'll meet the loser of the Travis Browne vs. Alistair Overeem fight at UFC on FS 1 in August.
Watch now, later, or never?
Now. The bout has a lot of action and some devastating strikes. Throw in an unreal finish and you've got yourself some entertainment.
