I'm back with another installment of the MMA Tete-A-Tete: Coarsening the Discourse. Today my guest is Brian J. D'Souza author of Pound for Pound: The Modern Gladiators of Mixed Martial Arts. The book looks inside the careers of UFC champions Georges St. Pierre, B.J. Penn, Anderson Silva, Mauricio "Shogun: Rua and MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko.
I reviewed the book a few weeks back if you want to know more.
As always if you enjoy this sort of gum flapping, subscribe to the MMA Nation YouTube channel. Subscribers are the only ones who can watch us shoot these things live.
Topics covered include:
* The manager skanometer -- I get Brian to rate the various managers of GSP, Anderson and Fedor on a confusing -5 to +5 scale based on how much of a net negative they were for the fighter's career.
* The odysseys of the various fighters, especially GSP, BJ and Fedor as they navigated the shark-filled waters of the MMA world from the small circuits to the big time of Pride, K-1 and the UFC
* The Joe Louis bet -- The % chances of each of the 5 fighters discussed in the book meeting the sad fate of the legendary bankrupt boxing champ -- reduced to handing out bathroom mints for tips in a Vegas casino -- is given by Brian.
* Fedor's long-strange trip from Stary Oskul to Japan to the States and back to Stary Oskul
Enjoy!
