Ah, Saturday morning at the NCAA wrestling championships. Anyone who has made it this far into the tournament is an All American, now it's just a matter of figuring out where on the podium they will stand.
Here's how this morning works. Wrestlers who lost in the quarterfinals of the consolation round will wrestle for 7th place. while this is happening, those wrestlers with only one loss will wrestle the consolation semi finals. Losers of the consi semis will drop to the 5th place match, while winners if the the consi semis will advance to the consi finals and wrestle for third place.
While this round does not affect whom receives first or second place in an individual weight class, it often has great importance in the team standings. Penn State has five wrestlers in the finals, and are well out ahead in the team race, yet Minnesota and Oklahoma State, both of whom are mathematically alive in the team race, still have plenty of wrestlers alive in this session. If Minnesota or OSU wrestlers go nuts and rack up a ton of bonus points this morning while Penn State wrestlers lay an egg in the finals, it is possible that Penn State may not win the team championship.
This round is worth watching, so please join us.
