Rick Story had his back to the wall and he passed the test with flying colors. His UFC 158 welterweight bout against the debuting Quinn Mulhern was expected to be a slugfest and both men delivered that, but Story's pressure and a punch to eye of Mulhern led to the finish. Story beat him down and earned the stoppage at 3:05 of round one.
As usual, it's Story who was pressing the action early. He landed a couple of bombs against the cage that led Mulhern to unsuccessfully look for a takedown. Mulhern landed a big left, but Story responded with his own. Mulhern's counters were starting to land a little more.
Story clipped Mulhern in the eye with a punch though, and Quinn didn't know what to do. Story landed a couple more huge shots that dropped Mulhern, and that was all she wrote.
Story (15-6) moved to 8-4 in the UFC overall with the win, and picked up his first finish in two and a half years. Mulhern (18-3) had a three-fight win streak stopped with the loss.
