Apparently everyone who trains for a Chad Mendes fight ends up with an injury. For an incredible 3rd time in as many months, Mendes' original opponent has been forced off the card. In December his fight with Hacran Dias was canceled, likewise for February's contest with Manny Gamburyan, and as of today you can add Clay Guida to the list. Sherdog has the story:
Chad Mendes is once again without an opponent, as Clay Guida has suffered an undisclosed injury and will be unable to compete at UFC on Fox 7.
Sherdog.com recently confirmed the development with sources close to the situation, who verified that Mendes is still expected to compete at the April 20 event from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., though the search for a new opponent has apparently not gone well.
I cannot even recall the last time Guida was injured and had to withdraw from any fight, so this is just an incredible run of bad luck for Mendes. UFC officials found a replacement in December for Dias (Yaotzin Meza), but didn't have one for Gamburyan at UFC 157, and it looks like the new search for an opponent for UFC on Fox 7 on April 20th is not promising. So worst case scenario Mendes is looking at his 2nd straight outright removal from an event because of an injury to his original opponent and a lack of a suitable replacement.
