Saturday December 14, Bloody Elbow presents live fight coverage of Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana. Showtime Boxing Broner vs. Maidana airs live on Showtime this Saturday, December 14, with a fight time of 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT. Bloody Elbow will have live fight coverage, including results and discussion, right here.
When he walks into tonight's main event, Adrien Broner will be the betting favorite by a margin of roughly -500 - a pretty sizable gap. Broner's position as the favorite has been reflected in the pre-fight hype, much of which has focused on the brash, undefeated Broner. This is understandable. Again, Broner is undefeated, he's seen as a possible superstar in the making, he possesses real talent, and he makes good headlines.
It may be understandable, but it's also short-sighted because of one man - Marcos Maidana. It's easy to look at Maidana's three losses and the fact that he has more often than not stumbled when faced with the highest level of competition and decide that yes, this is Broner's fight. But if that is all you see when you look at Maidana, you are missing some key details of tonight's fight.

Broner is in the testing portion of his career, and this is a major test. Maidana is a powerful puncher, a man who knows how to stop opponents. Broner's last test came against Paulie Malignaggi - a talented fighter, but a man no one would ever accuse of being heavy-handed. This will be the first time Broner faces someone with this level of talent and power. If there's been a knock on Broner so far, it's that, while he models his style on Floyd Mayweather's famous shoulder roll, he doesn't do it as well, and so can get hit. Against Maidana, if he gets hit, Broner very well may go down.
It will also test his ablity to stay in a fight all the way until it's over. Maidana is the kind of fighter who can pose a threat at every moment thanks to both his power and his mental toughness. If Broner lets off the gas in the later rounds, Maidana again will make him pay.
More than any other fight he's taken so far, this is the one that stylistically will truly reveal who Adrien Broner is. If he is that great one he claims to be, he wins this. If there is any chink in his armor, Maidana will find it, exploit it, and end the Broner story, for now at least.
Me, I'm a believer in Broner, and I think he handles this. But I am also a realist, and know that it won't be easy. We'll find out tonight.
