The top of the UFC's welterweight division will be chaotic over the next few months as the division sorts itself out following Georges St-Pierre's relinquishing of his title. Jake Ellenberger, who is currently out injured with a hamstring problem, texted MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani during yesterday's fallout from the GSP title vacancy, saying he wants a rematch with Carlos Condit:
Ellenberger (29-7) debuted in the UFC against Condit in 2009, filling in for the injured Chris Lytle at UFC Fight Night 19 in Oklahoma. He battered Condit in the 1st round and nearly pulled off a stunning 1st round TKO win of the iron-chinned Condit, but Condit was able to rally and win a split decision. Ellenberger's last fight was a lackluster decision loss to Rory MacDonald, and the hamstring injury he suffered a few weeks ago caused him to pull out of his UFC Fight Night 34 main event slot against Tarec Saffiedine.
Condit (29-7) stopped Martin Kampmann in his own rematch, avenging a prior split decision loss to him in his UFC debut. He was supposed to fight Matt Brown tonight at UFC on Fox 9, but Brown is out with two herniated discs. It is expected that Condit will fight at UFC 171 on March 15th, the same card as the vacant welterweight title fight between Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler. It is quite conceivable for Ellenberger, who is expected to recover from his hamstring injury by February, to face Condit again.
Personally, I am all for Ellenberger/Condit 2 solely because just about everyone else in the top 10 is booked or injured (or in Nick Diaz's case, retired). The only other realistic opponent for Condit for UFC 171 who isn't in the top 10 is Tyron Woodley. The downside to the tentative plan to put Condit vs. TBA on a PPV is the fact that it'll only be a 3 round fight instead of a 5 round main event. Either way, it'll be interesting to see who Condit fights next, because a title shot against the Lawler/Hendricks winner would surely be in his future with another win.
