UFC on Fox 10 has its first confirmed fight via the featherweight division. Fox Sports' Damon Martin reports that Jeremy Stephens will fight Darren Elkins on the January 25th "Week before the Super Bowl" card. Elkins is the #10 ranked featherweight while Stephens could conceivably be ranked with a win over Elkins, who asked to fight in Chicago due to the close proximity to his hometown of Hobart, Indiana to the Windy City.
Stephens (22-9) dropped to featherweight following 3 straight defeats at lightweight. "Lil' Heathen" pulverized Estevan Payan at UFC 160 and then knocked out Rony Jason (who later KO'd a door) with a head kick just 40 seconds into the 1st round. The 27-year-old has never won 3 consecutive UFC bouts, which is incredibly given he's been in the organization since 2007.
Elkins (17-3) won his first 5 fights at 145 lbs, and filled in for Clay Guida against Chad Mendes at UFC on Fox 7. Unfortunately for him, he was stopped in 68 seconds by "Money" Mendes in San Jose. Elkins did recover nicely in Indianapolis, beating Hatsu Hioki by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 27. His ability to "grind" out decisions has helped him climb up the divisional ranks, so consider this a battle of contrasting style as he takes on the striker in Stephens.
It's early days, so no word on whether or not this fight will air on the main card of the preliminary card, but I'd tend to think this would be one of the "leading" FS1 prelim bouts.
