Mikey Garcia's first trip up to the 130 pound division started with a scare for the former 126 pound champion. In the 2nd round, Garcia felt the power of a 130 pound opponent, as Martinez landed a perfect shot to drop Garcia to the canvas for only the second time in his career. Garcia was visibly surprised, but it did not impact his performance, as from there on out, it was all Mikey Garcia. Throughout the fight, Garcia did was Garcia does best - pick his opponent apart, slowly building the pressure until he scores the KO. For this fight, the pressure began to seriously mount starting in round 6, where Garcia began really connecting at will and frustrrating Martinez. In round 8, Garcia used his superb left hook again, but this time he brought it to the body, landing a great blow to the liver. Martinez went down, and there was no getting up.
With that win, Garcia effectively becomes the #1 130 pound fighter in the world after only 1 fight in the division. He remains undefeated, and proves that he is indeed something special.
