UFC Middleweights Constantinos Philippou and Riki Fukuda put on the third of six straight unanimous decision bouts (8/11 of the fights at UFC 148 went to the judges) that dragged down the UFC 148 card last night in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout saw some decent action but was marred by several fouls by Fukuda, including a brutal eye poke in the third round.
Philippou managed to make good use of his stellar boxing technique to beat Fukuda up a bit in every round but it was closer than the score cards revealed. Fukuda used his wrestling to get a couple of good slams in and landed quite a few strikes of his own.
What was the high spot of this fight?
It's not exactly a high light, but the eye poke in the final stanza was easily the most noteworthy moment of the bout. It forced a long break in the action while a staggered Philippou rolled on the mat and moaned "oh my God" repeatedly.
Where do these guys go from here?
Philippou improves his UFC record to 4-1 and might be ready for a step up in competition. He might be ready for the winner of Ed Herman and Jake Shields at UFC 150.
Fukuda has had a pretty unlucky tenure in the UFC, marred by injuries from a car accident and a terrible judges decision that cost him a UFC 127 bout against Nick Ring (he got the win bonus anyway since Dana thought he won.) I expect him to get one last chance in the Octagon.
