British boxing saw one of the most controversial bouts in its history today as bitter bitter rivals David Haye and Dereck Chisora met in a bout unlicensed by British authorities. Haye won by TKO in the fifth round. After getting two knock downs he finally did enough to stop Chisora at 2:57 of round 5.
The build up to this bout was as crazy as any bout ever.
It all started when Haye went to the post-fight press conference of Chisora's February loss to Vitali Klitschko and Chisora started tearing into him with trash talk. Ultimately Chisora and Haye got into a brawl right there at the presser and several people were hurt in the punch up which involved Haye swinging a photographer's tripod around like a pole arm.
Chisora was suspended indefinitely by the WBC for his antics and the British Board of Control refused to greenlight a Haye-Chisora bout. Fortunately the Luxembourg Boxing Federation stepped in and that was all it took to put the fight on in Britain. Not sure how that works, but there you go.
After the jump we'll hear from Scott Christ of Bad Left Hook with a summary of the action:
Haye (26-2, 24 KO) did what he said he'd do. The 31-year-old former cruiserweight champion dictated the fight moving backward, shutting Chisora (15-4, 9 KO) down with a sharp jab and the occasional right hand or left hook, and even a few body shots, to keep Chisora off-balance.
Chisora, on the other hand, appeared singularly focused on landing one big right hand, and I think that was to his detriment. The 28-year-old brawler pressured nicely, but Haye was able to handle it with good footwork and that ever-present left hand coming at Chisora, who didn't use his own jab much at all.
