Nothing changed from last month, Nova Unaio still stips atop the featherweight division.
There's been only a fair amount of movement since WEC 44 when #1 Jose Aldo wrestled away the title from #2 Mike Brown. But matters are about to change. The WEC has announced WEC 48 where #3 Urijah Faber will challenge Aldo for the featherweight crown. He earned his shot after stopping #6 Rafael Assuncao.
As for Brown, he's slated to lock horns on the same WEC 48 card - by the way, the first WEC card to hit PPV - with #7 Manny Gamburyan.
Strangely, #4 Hatsu Hioki still sits in the fourth spot after getting robbed by the judges in a losing effort to #8 Michihiro Omigawa in Sengoku Raiden Championships. No word yet on where either fights is headed as Hioki has remained silent while Omigawa's Yoshida Dojo seems no longer involved with SRC. Stay tuned for more information.
DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix winner #5 Bibiano Fernandes stays in the fifth spot this month. He is slated to take on Joachim Hansen at DREAM 13 in March. This will be Hansen's first fight at 145lbs and won't be an easy transition.
As for #9 Marlon Sandro, he gets a chance to get back in the winning column unless the judges decide to continue making mistakes. That should prove more difficult this time, however. Sandro will take on Cage Force and Pancrase veteran, Tomonari Kanomata at Sengoku 12, which will take place on March 7. The fight will air HDNet in North America.
#10 Masanori Kanehara drops a spot but stays in the top 10. Kanehara is hanging on to top 10 relevance when he won a major fight and upset Norifumi Yamamoto.
Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the online MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA websites to produce our consensus rankings.
We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.
