Fabrico Werdum set up himself for a future heavyweight Strikeforce title shot at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg.
The Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion absorbed heavy punches early to land on top in Kyle's guard. Kyle actually attempted a modified armbar attempt, but against a BJJ player like Werdum he essentially facilitated Werdum's eventual guard pass.
Kyle tried to stand after Werdum was on top, but opened his neck for the submission ace. Kyle initially fought the attempt, but was eventually forced to tap.
Werdum avoids what could've been a costly scenario for Strikeforce had he lost to Kyle. Werdum likely won't move any units going forward, but at least he has a strong performance and win to buttress support for a major fight with Fedor Emelianenko.
Fabrico Werdum defeats Mike Kyle via first round guillotine choke at 1:24 of the first.
