It's been reported over and over that current UFC Lightweight champion BJ Penn isn't really excited about the prospect of having to fight the winner of the number one contender match between Kenny Florian and Roger Huerta. While some have claimed Huerta might prove a decent test for Penn, I tend to think those people are grossly inflating Huerta's abilities. Penn proved on Saturday that no one - and I mean no one - at this weight class can touch him. He can submit submission wizards, out wrestle wrestlers and bang on the feet with the best. His timing is impeccable, he's got natural killer instinct, and truthfully, no one in the lightweight division possess any offensive capability that can potentially pose problems for Penn. The only risk that I suppose is worth acknowledging is that Penn could take either fighter lightly and risk get overwhelmed by the more prepared combatant. In Penn's mind, he's achieved as high of a degree of accomplishment possible in beating Sherk, so while he wouldn't want to lose to either Florian or Huerta, beating them would mean very little. But losing to them would also likely mean no shot at GSP, the bout Penn really desires. And that, I presume, provides just enough incentive for Penn to avoid completely dropping the ball in the interim.
