Sean Strickland and Uriah Hall headlined UFC Vegas 33, and while the TUF standout showed some heart, it was mostly Strickland who pushed the pace and controlled the contest. His pace, pressure and boxing caused Hall problems from the start, and Strickland went on to have dominant showings from the third round up until the final bell.
Strickland won a dominant unanimous decision with the scores of 50-44, 50-45 and 49-46. The big victory marks Strickland’s fifth straight, continuing an impressive streak that likely gets him in the top 10 of the middleweight division now.
The rest of the card was seemingly cursed and had several fights scrapped even up to the very last minute. This UFC event ended up with just 10 bouts, and not only did it seriously lack fights, it also didn’t have any ranked competitors outside of the main event. Despite that, there were still some notable and entertaining performances.
Cheyanne Buys vs Gloria de Paula was promoted to the co-main event slot on the very last minute as Rani Yahya vs Kyung Ho Kang got cancelled due to COVID-19. Buys made perfect use of her higher profile slot, landing a head kick right as de Paula was going back to her feet. She followed up with a few more punches, and got the finish in exactly one minute.
The Contender Series veteran in Buys improved to 6-2, and won her first official UFC bout in the process.
Also getting big finishes on the card were first time UFC winners in Jared Gooden and Melsik Baghdasaryan. Gooden improved to 1-2 in the promotion with a huge right straight that finished Niklas Stolze one minute into their bout. Baghdasaryan, on the other hand, looked sharp on the feet and found a home for a nice head kick that finished Collin Anglin in the second round.
