The headliner for UFC 264 did not disappoint as we got a banger of a trilogy fight with a crazy ending. The UFC’s former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier, earned a TKO victory over former champ-champ, Conor McGregor, but it came in a bizarre way. McGregor broke his leg towards the end of the round, and it folded over itself. Conor was unable to stand after the bell and the bout was called off. Poirier takes the trilogy with McGregor 2-1, and there was plenty of bad blood to go around between the two after the fact. Despite the weird ending, Poirier had a phenomenal performance that should not be overshadowed by the wonky ending.
McGregor went right at Poirier with an assortment of kicks, including spinning ones to the body. Dustin responded with a calf kick of his own, and the fighters started trading leg strike for leg strike. Poirier opened up with a boxing combo that had McGregor shooting in. After a botched guillotine attempt from Conor, Poirier took top position. McGregor threw elbows from his back, and then Poirier threw harder ones from above. Just before the bell, the fighters exchanged on the feet, but McGregor had actually broke his leg and collapsed to the ground. Poirier was unable to pound out a finish, but after the bell the leg injury was discovered and the fight was stopped.
