How did these two get here?

When Dustin Poirier was offered a shot at the UFC lightweight title earlier this year, many were surprised to see ‘The Diamond’ turn it down. For Poirier it was straightforward, a trilogy with McGregor brings a huge financial gain that a title fight does not. The plan for Poirier will be to see out this chapter with McGregor and then challenge Charles Oliveira for the 155-pound strap. Given how the rematch went down in January, it’s very much advantage Poirier as we head into the trilogy.

The respectful, cordial and toned-down version of Conor McGregor we saw before UFC 257 is out the window. McGregor has gone back to his brash ways that were at the forefront of his rise to stardom and ‘champ champ status. When McGregor was stopped by Poirier in January, the Irishman blamed a rumoured boxing match with Manny Pacquaio and feeling “pity” for Poirier for the loss. It’s safe to say this time around there will be no excuses for McGregor. With one win in his last three fights, this fight is do or die for ‘Notorious’.

Why should you care?

With the scores at one apiece, there is no way you can miss the final chapter of this trilogy.
