UFC Vegas 30 fight stats: Gane claims longest active heavyweight winning streak

New, comments

Ciryl Gane had one of his most productive wins in beating Alexander Volkov.

With his unanimous decision victory in the main event of UFC Vegas 30, Ciryl Gane moved to 6-0 with the promotion. With his win over Alexander Volkov, Gane has the longest active winning streak in the UFC heavyweight division.

The longest winning streak in the division’s history belongs to Junior Dos Santos. Dos Santos won his UFC debut in October 2008 and went unbeaten until Cain Velasquez topped him by decision in 2012. The loss to Velasquez ended Dos Santos’ winning streak at nine and his heavyweight title reign after one successful defense. Andrei Arlovski and Velasquez, who are both former heavyweight titleholders, have seven-fight winning streaks in their resumes.

Gane, who was never in danger against Volkov, used a very tactical approach in earning the win. He fought at distance and used smart defense during the 25-minute bout. Yes, Volkov landed more significant strikes against Gane than any other UFC fighter, but nearly half of those strikes were not particularly damaging leg strikes.

Gane’s performance earned him several spots in the UFC heavyweight single fight record book. The French fighter’s 135 significant strikes landed tied him for seventh, his 134 distance strikes landed rank fifth, the 40 leg strikes he landed check in at the No. 4 spot, his 35 significant body strikes landed tie him for ninth, and he landed 42 total leg strikes, which earned him the No. 8 spot.

As for the judges, two saw the fight 50-45 for Gane and one went 49-46.

After his win, Gane said he is ready to face current UFC heavyweight kingpin, Francis Ngannou.

“I don’t need another fight for the title shot. I think this guy Volkov was a really great challenge to prove it, and I proved it. I did it. So, tomorrow, yes, if the UFC want to match me for the title shot, I’m ready,” Gane said at the post-fight press conference.
