UFC 263 results: Brandon Moreno subs Deiveson Figueiredo to become flyweight champion

Brandon Moreno just choked out Deiveson Figueiredo to become the new flyweight champion in the UFC 263 co-main event.

The co-main event for UFC 263 was the setting for an instant flyweight title rematch that saw the challenger, Brandon Moreno, submit the champ, Deiveson Figueiredo, in the third round to become the new 125-pound king. Moreno had a lights out performance. He dominated Fig everywhere. He dropped him with a jab, he out-wrestled him, and then finished him off with a sweet RNC. Moreno is the first Mexican born fighter to become a UFC champion, and did so by going 5-0-2 in his last seven matches. The amount of emotion pouring out of Brandon was surely felt, and the UFC now has a new king in the flyweight castle.

Moreno took the center of the cage right away, and delivered a hard lower leg kick to the champ. Figueiredo was being quite patient, watching and seeing what Moreno was throwing his way. Just as Figueiredo opened up, Moreno dropped him with crisp jab. It wasn’t long before Fig was back up, but this round was all Moreno.

Another stiff jab from Brandon opened up the second round, prompting Fig to muscle a takedown. From the top, the champ tried to lock up a guillotine, but Moreno used the moment to scramble up. Moreno clinched up and unleashed a bunch of knees to the legs, and then hit a takedown of his own — despite a Fig fence grab. Figueiredo landed some nasty elbows form his back, but the second he stood up, Brandon took him right back down.

Moreno was popping his jab in the third stanza, commanding the center of the cage. The champ responded with a fancy spinning kick to the body, but Brandon hit a takedown that Fig didn’t see coming. Moreno quickly scrambled to the back, and began working hard for a rear-naked choke. Fig defended for a bit, but Moreno would not be denied. He let adjusting the hold until he was fully under the chin. Figueiredo was stuck and respectfully tapped out. YEET!
