It has been a good week for women’s boxing champions turned mixed martial artists. One day after two-time Olympic gold medalist and boxing champion Claressa Shields earned a third-round technical knockout over Brittney Elkin at 2021 PFL 4 in her MMA debut, fellow boxing champion Amanda Serrano earned a first-round submission over Valentina Garcia at iKON 7 in her third MMA fight.
The fight between Serrano and Garcia served as the headliner for the event, which took place at the Benito Juarez Auditorium in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. Serrano began the fight striking and kept tagging Garcia with hard right hands that had her backing up. A stunned Garcia attempted to shoot in for a takedown, but Serrano quickly snatched her neck and locked up a standing guillotine. Seconds later, Garcia tapped and the fight was over in just 60 seconds.

Although she has had quite the career in boxing, Serrano has been involved in MMA for a while. She was previously signed to Combate Americas — now known as Combate Global — and made her promotional and professional debut at Combate Estrellas 1, where she fought to a draw against Corina Herrera. Serrano returned six months later at Combate Americas: Mexico vs. USA and submitted Erendira Ordonez with a standing rear-naked choke.
Serrano was expected to fight again in January of last year at Combate Americas: San Juan — an event that was supposed to take place in Puerto Rico, which is where she was born — but it was canceled after the island was devastated by a series of earthquakes. Serrano decided to return to boxing and went on to earn technical knockouts over Simone da Silva and Dahiana Santana respectively.
Prior to her fight at iKON 7, Serrano retained both her WBC and WBO female featherweight titles as well as won the vacant IBO female featherweight title with a knockout of Daniela Romina Bermudez in March.
